Risk Of Breast Cancer Increases In Women With Breast Cysts

LONDON, ENGLAND -- May 21, 1999 -- Breast cysts are found in seven percent of women in more-developed countries. Studies show that women with these palpable breast cysts, which are thought to form because of aberrations in the normal processes that occur in the breast, are more likely to develop breast cancer than the general population.

There are two types of cysts -- type I, of which women are more likely to have large numbers, and type II. Evidence indicates that the risk of breast cancer might be higher in women with type I cysts. In this week's issue of The Lancet, Mr. J. M. Dixon and colleagues from Edinburgh, Scotland, aimed to confirm whether the risk of breast cancer associated with type I cysts was higher than that associated with type II.

The study involved 1,374 women with palpable breast cysts of either type, who attended the Edinburgh Breast Unit as new referrals between 1981 and 1987. The type of cysts and histories of factors related to breast cancer were recorded. Data on the incidence of breast cancer for these women were gathered from the statistics division of the National Health Service of Scotland.

The system holds records of all related admissions to hospital and diagnoses of cancer at any site. Data were available until January 1995. To find out whether the risk of cancer in these women was raised compared with the general population, the investigators calculated the number of expected breast-cancer cases for the region from 1988 data on incidence for Scotland.

The risk of breast cancer in all women with cysts, irrespective of type of cyst, was raised compared with the general population. The risk of breast cancer was highest in women younger than 45 years, which is the age-group most likely to develop breast cysts; this risk decreased with older age.

"If other studies confirm our findings, the question should be raised of whether women who develop palpable breast cysts at younger than 50 years should be offered regular mammographic breast screening," the researchers said.
