DDW: Bismuth-Based Triple Therapy For H. Pylori Eradicates Bacteria In 85% Of Cases

MONT SAINT-HILAIRE, QC -- May 18, 1999 -- Research presented at Digestive Disease Week in Orlando, FL. shows that Axcan Pharma’s blister-packaged bismuth-based triple therapy for the treatment of Helicobacter pylori eradicated H. Pylori bacteria in 85 percent of cases.

Axcan's Canadian Multicenter Study with this regimen (metronidazole, tetracycline and bismuth subcitrate) combined with omeprazole for seven days, included 146 patients. Preliminary results have shown that, overall, this treatment eradicates H. pylori bacteria in 85 percent of cases. This rate rises to over 90 percent in metronidazole sensitive strains.

This study confirms previous results with this bismuth-based triple therapy that showed high eradication rates (almost 90 percent) with excellent tolerance.

H. pylori is the most widespread infection in the world and is now linked to both duodenal and gastric ulcer diseases as well as gastric carcinoma. Infection rates vary from 15 percent to 70 percent depending on age and geographic location.
