Research Collaboration in the Field of Diabetes Care

BAGSVAERD, Denmark, Oct. 29, 1996 -- Novo Nordisk A/S (NYSE: NVO) today announced that a research collaboration has been signed with Takeda Chemical Industries, Ltd. in the field of Diabetes Care.

The aim of the collaboration is to identify compounds that may potentially be developed into orally active drugs to control blood glucose levels in people with Type 2 diabetes.

Joint research will be based on Novo Nordisk's extensive expertise related to the cell receptors responsible for blood glucose regulation combined with Takeda's library of small organic molecules with specific affinity for these receptors.

The research program will be co-operative and costs will be split equally between the two companies. No up-front payment or milestone payments are involved.

Mads Krogsgaard Thomsen, corporate vice president, Health Care Discovery, Novo Nordisk, said, "The research agreement is very important because the combined forces of Novo Nordisk and Takeda increase our chances of using our proprietary technology to develop new and better drugs to treat Type 2 diabetes."
