| | | ![]() Forbes Medi-Tech Human Trial Results on Cholesterol Lowering Agent VANCOUVER, British Columbia, Oct. 23, 1996 -- FORBES MEDI-TECH INC(VSE:FMI) The Company is pleased to report the results of its second limited human feeding trial, conducted at McGill University in Montreal using the Company's cholesterol lowering agent, FCP-3P1, with several significant implications. A group of twelve adult hyperlipidemic males were fed an average Western diet (high in saturated fats and cholesterol) and received 1.5 grams of FCP-3P1 daily for 10 days. The results showed an equivalent cholesterol lowering effect as the first feeding trial also conducted at McGill University (reported April 2, 1996). "This study confirmed the cholesterol lowering results of the first trial we conducted earlier this year on subjects with normal cholesterol levels" said Dr. Peter Jones, Director, School of Dietetics and Human Nutrition. "Given these exciting human feeding trial results and the numerous positive animal studies conducted earlier, our group of investigators is looking forward to further development of this product as a pharmaceutical agent as soon as possible." This second study also explored the effect of FCP-3P1, which is derived from plant sterols, and its relationship to plant sterol ratios in the bloodstream. (The Company has already filed a U.S. patent application for a plant sterol-based cardiovascular risk marker to assess, monitor and treat cardiovascular disease). Using plant sterol ratios as an independent risk factor, the subjects were statistically divided into two groups; subjects with a low ratio, indicating a "high risk" of cardiovascular disease, and subjects with high ratio, indicating a "low risk". The high risk group subjects were excellent respondents to FCP-3P1 with an average cholesterol reduction of 38 percent. "We're very excited with these results. The high risk segment of the population appears to be more responsive to FCP-3P1." said Dr. Egon Novak, Chief Executive Officer. "Assuming that these results can be duplicated in larger controlled studies, FCP-3P1 may ultimately provide a very focused and highly beneficial use as a cholesterol lowering agent." The Company is currently in the process of preparing for an Investigative New Drug submission (IND) to the regulatory authorities.
