Salagen Provides A Variety Of Benefits To Sjogren’s Syndrome Patients

MINNEAPOLIS, MN -- December 7, 1999 -- MGI PHARMA, Inc. reported that presentations at the VII International Symposium on Sjogren's Syndrome in Venice, Italy noted a variety of benefits to Sjogren's syndrome patients who take pilocarpine HCl, the active ingredient in MGI PHARMA's Salagen(R) Tablets.

In one study authored by Dr. Athena Papas of Tufts University School of Dental Medicine, Sjogren's syndrome patients were found to have retained their salivary flow after two years of treatment with Salagen Tablets compared to a significant decrease in the untreated group. In addition, the study group treated with Salagen Tablets demonstrated better oral health. In a separate abstract, Dr. Papas and the other investigators noted that Sjogren's syndrome patients are at high risk for rampant dental caries. In another presentation, improvements were observed in salivary and lachrymal (eye) measurements following administration of pilocarpine HCl.

Susan Gallagher, director of clinical research at MGI Pharma, observed, "The work by Dr. Papas and others continues to expand the understanding of using Salagen Tablets to provide symptomatic relief for Sjogren's syndrome patients. In particular, the information at this international symposium complements data from other investigators about the use of Salagen(R) Tablets presented at the recent American College of Rheumatology meeting in Boston. MGI Pharma is most gratified that the safety and efficacy of Salagen Tablets continues to be demonstrated."

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Salagen Tablets for the treatment of xerostomia (dry mouth) associated with Sjogren's syndrome in February 1998. Salagen Tablets have been approved in other markets for treatment of both dry eye and dry mouth symptoms associated with Sjogren's syndrome. Studies demonstrate that the drug works by stimulating the exocrine glands, including the salivary glands, to increase their activity.

Sjogren's syndrome is a chronic, inflammatory, autoimmune disease that gradually damages the body's moisture-producing glands, including the salivary glands, causing patients to suffer significantly from the resulting dryness. Symptoms of the disease can include dry mouth, dry eyes, dry skin, and vaginal dryness, depending upon which moisture-producing glands are affected and to what degree the glands are damaged. Left untreated, Sjogren's syndrome can ultimately affect the neurological, muscular and gastrointestinal systems.
