Seroxat/Paxil Approved In UK For Social Anxiety Disorder

PHILADELPHIA, PA -- Oct. 8, 1998 -- SmithKline Beecham’s Seroxat(R)/Paxil(R) (paroxetine HCl) has been approved for the treatment of social anxiety disorder in the United Kingdom.

It is the first selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitor (SSRI) to be approved for this severely debilitating and little known anxiety disorder. Seroxat/Paxil is currently under review for this indication throughout the rest of Europe and the United States.

Social anxiety disorder is a common psychiatric condition with around two to five per cent of the population suffering from the condition at any one time. Social anxiety disorder is characterised by an excessive fear of scrutiny by other people, or by persistent fear of humiliation or embarrassment in social or performance situations. This results in either avoiding the feared situation or enduring intense distress, including symptoms of trembling, rapid heartbeat, blushing, shortness of breath, sweating and stomach upset. The disorder has a devastating impact on people's lives and can result in discontinued education, chronic unemployment and financial dependence, not getting married or having children, suicidal thoughts and alcohol/substance abuse.
