Chromax Effective For Steroid-Induced Diabetes Treatment

PURCHASE, NY -- March 26, 1999 -- Results of a clinical trial showed that Ambi Inc.’s Chromax(R) brand chromium picolinate reduced or eliminated the symptoms of diabetes in 41 out of 44 patients with steroid-induced diabetes.

The study was conducted by Alexander Ravina, MD, at the Diabetes Department of the Linn Clinic in Haifa, Israel and was reported in the British journal Diabetic Medicine.

In the study, patients took Chromax chromium picolinate and were then able to reduce or eliminate their diabetic medication, such as insulin. In addition, their blood sugar levels were lowered as well. These patients had developed diabetes as a result of undergoing steroid treatment for other diseases and had lost high levels of chromium.

Patients were given Chromax chromium picolinate supplements beginning at 600 micrograms daily, gradually decreasing to 200 to 400 micrograms daily within one week. None of the patients treated experienced adverse side effects.

"The results of this trial show the efficacy and safety of chromium picolinate in patients with steroid-induced diabetes," Dr. Ravina said. These patients were referred to me because they did not respond to traditional drug therapy. Based on these positive results, we now need to conduct additional trials to further assess chromium picolinate's role in the management of this serious medical problem."

Steroid-induced diabetes is a condition that can occur in individuals after either short or long term administration of steroids, as seen in patients with asthma, allergies or arthritis. There are an estimated 16 million diabetics in the United States.

Chromium picolinate is one of the most bioavailable sources of the essential mineral chromium. Chromium is needed by the body for normal metabolism of fats, carbohydrates and protein. Under certain conditions and with age, many people may lose excessive amounts of this essential mineral and, therefore, they may benefit from taking chromium supplements.

Chromium picolinate is the most researched form of chromium and has been shown in more than 25 well-controlled clinical trials to help maintain healthy glucose levels and to help build lean muscle mass.
