Consumers Should Be Aware of False Rumors Regarding Similac Settlement

ABBOTT PARK, Ill., Dec. 12, 1996 -- Abbott Laboratories announced that consumers should be aware that there are misleading rumors circulating about an infant formula litigation settlement and the quality and safety of infant formula products.

The quality of Abbott's infant formula products has never been an issue throughout the course of this litigation. The litigation did not raise any issues about the quality or safety of Abbott's Similac or any other infant formula products. Abbott can assure parents and health care professionals that all Abbott infant formulas are safe and nutritious. There is nothing more important to new parents than ensuring that the formula they feed their babies is of the highest quality. And there is nothing more important to Abbott than ensuring the integrity of our products.

Abbott Laboratories (NYSE: ABT) reached a settlement agreement with plaintiffs' attorneys in a class action litigation regarding pricing of infant formula brought on behalf of infant formula consumers in 17 states. Abbott agreed to a total settlement covering all 17 states to be paid in cash and infant formula products. The settlement contains no admission of guilt or wrongdoing and requires no change in the company's marketing and business practices. Abbott competes responsibly, aggressively, and completely within the law.

States where infant formula consumers are eligible to share in the cash settlement funds include Wisconsin, Illinois, Louisiana, Minnesota, Mississippi, North Dakota, South Dakota and West Virginia.

Abbott has no role in the administration or disbursement of funds relating to this settlement.

A news release sent out today from Rust Consulting, the settlement administrator, instructed consumers in the eight states where cash settlements are available -- but not in other states -- to send a letter requesting a claim form and a self-addressed stamped envelope to: Settlement Administrator, Infant Formula Litigation, P.O. Box 1602, Minneapolis, MN 55440-1602. The mailed envelope must identify the state where the formula was purchased.
