Canada To Be Major Player in International Angina Research

TORONTO, Dec. 9, 1996 -- Bayer Inc. today announced that Canada will play a major role in the ambitious new international study, ACTION, (A Coronary disease Trial Investigating Outcome with Nifedipine-GITS). The research investment in Canada will total about $20 million over the next six years and will involve close to 2000 Canadian patients. The study is believed to be the largest ever initiated to measure long-term outcomes in patients treated for symptoms of angina.

ACTION is a multi-national, multi-centre, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial and will use Adalat(TM)GITS or matching placebo in patients treated with angina. "Canada was chosen because of its world-renowned quality of research and expert investigators", said Dr. Corey Toal, Bayer's Product Development Manager - Cardiovascular. "It's really exciting for Canada, our scientists and our patients, to be playing such a significant role in the trial", he added.

The study is being led in Canada by Dr. J.D. Parker from Mount Sinai Hospital and the University of Toronto who is also the Deputy Chairman of the world-wide study. The other Canadian lead investigators are: Dr. William Kostuk from University Hospital in London, Ontario, Dr. Martial Bourassa, from L'institut de Cardiologie de Montreal (ICM), and Dr. Andrew Morris from St. Boniface Hospital in Winnipeg.

ACTION represents the first, large scale clinical outcome study examining the effect of an anti-anginal agent on cardiovascular event-free survival.

The six-year trial will begin enrolling Canadian patients in January 1997. The world-wide investment by Bayer will be in excess of $100 million and participating countries include Canada, Europe, Israel and Australia.

Bayer Inc., the Canadian subsidiary of the international chemical and health care company, Bayer AG (Germany), is research-based with major businesses in health care, chemicals and imaging technologies. Headquartered in Toronto, Bayer Inc. and its sister company, Bayer Rubber Inc., of Sarnia, employ 2,300 people and had combined sales of more than $1.2 billion in 1995.
