New Technologies in Breast Cancer Research Aid in Early Detection

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.-- Nov. 15, 1996 -- Manufacturers of breast cancer products are constantly pushing the boundaries of technology to find a cure for breast cancer.

Their efforts are replete with research efforts to promote early detection of the disease and developing drugs to treat breast cancer in its various stages, according to research conducted by Frost & Sullivan, U.S. BREAST CANCER DIAGNOSTICS, THERAPEUTICS AND PROSTHETICS.

In 1995, the market for breast cancer therapeutics, diagnostics, and prosthetics totaled $916.7 million.

Breast cancer is an ominous disease that threatens life and inflicts pain and suffering on its victims. It is a high profile disease, and several companies are involved in the race to find products that can effectively diagnose and treat it.

Treatment options, and alternatives are expanding daily. Ranging from cytotoxic agents to gene therapy, the market is full of diverse companies and diagnostic technologies vying to influence the market while saving lives.

The segments covered in this study include Mammography, Stereotactic Biopsy, Ultrasound, Magnet Resonance Imaging, Chemotherapy Drugs, Hormonal Therapy and Radiotherapy.

Marketing trends include the alignment of companies with healthcare management organizations and the establishment of single year or multi-year contracts. Since managed care is dominating the healthcare arena, several companies are in the process of establishing different contracts with these agencies.

Several manufacturers of breast cancer imaging equipment are marketing stand-alone dedicated breast cancer units. This innovation has provided the patient with a lower cost unit that is specifically designed for breast imaging.

In addition, MRI guided biopsy procedures are being developed that can clearly determine lesions in the breast. "Companies that introduce technologically superior products in the marketplace expect to increase their market share," stated medical analyst Vasudha Badri.

The advent of digital mammography that is being developed by companies such as Fischer Imaging and ThermoTrex is expected to greatly enhance mammography. Also, technological innovations such as the delivery of targeted chemotherapy agents in the form of liposomes will prove valuable.

This study by Frost & Sullivan details in length efforts by firms involved in breast cancer research and treatment to conquer this disease. Its analysis provides significant strategic insight into the direction and velocity of this market; companies receive recommendations for strategic action when purchasing this report, as well as a reliable source of continuing research by an international consulting firm dedicated to defining market problems, needs and opportunities.
