Nicorette Mint is the third proven option for stopping smoking available from SmithKline Beecham, the providers of Nicorette(R) nicotine gum and NicoDerm(R) CQ(R) nicotine patch. Recent studies have shown that over-the-counter availability of stop smoking products has helped an additional quarter of a million people successfully quit smoking each year. Nicorette Mint, which works the same as original Nicorette, is sugar-free and will be available with a choice of the same two strengths -- 2 mg (for smokers of 24 or fewer cigarettes each day) and 4 mg (for smokers of 25 or more cigarettes each day). Nicorette Mint helps relieve nicotine withdrawal symptoms by providing a temporary alternative source of nicotine, easing the smoker's transition to becoming smoke-free. The nicotine in Nicorette Mint reaches the bloodstream more gradually and at lower doses than nicotine delivered by cigarettes and does not contain the harmful tars and carbon monoxide found in cigarette smoke. "Nicorette Mint addresses the physical addiction of smoking by controlling withdrawal symptoms so that the individual can concentrate on the social and psychological aspects of the smoking habit," said Saul Shiffman, Ph.D., professor of psychology, University of Pittsburgh. The Nicorette Mint Starter Kit includes a comprehensive user's guide that explains the process of quitting, how Nicorette works, specific tips for succeeding and advice about staying nicotine-free. The kit also contains an audio tape that explains how to use the gum and what to expect when quitting smoking, as well as relaxation and deep breathing exercises.
