The comparative study was a multicentre, double-blind, randomised, parallel-group trial of 362 patients conducted during the spring 1998 allergy season. Enrolled patients had moderate-to-severe nasal and non-nasal symptoms that had been inadequately controlled by oral antihistamine monotherapy or by intranasal steroid therapy. Patients were randomised to receive treatment for seven days with either Astelin Nasal Spray monotherapy or combination therapy of an oral antihistamine (loratadine) plus an intranasal corticosteroid (belcomethasone). In this study, there was no statistically significant difference between the Astelin Nasal Spray monotherapy group and the combination therapy group in controlling nasal and non-nasal seasonal allergic rhinitis symptoms. The most frequently observed adverse events were headache, somnolence and rhinitis. Related Links: Astelin, Wallace Laboratories
