"Bayer's established reputation in Europe in central nervous system research and its commitment to finding better treatment for Alzheimer's disease in particular make the company a welcome partner in the Alzheimer's Association mission to find a cure for this horrible disease which afflicts more than 4 million Americans," said Edward Truschke, Association president and CEO. Bayer's Institute for Dementia Research in West Haven, Conn. plans to work closely with the Ronald and Nancy Reagan Research Institute, the research arm of the Alzheimer's Association. It was created in 1995 to accelerate discovery of effective treatments and prevention measures for Alzheimer's disease. The key focus of the Bayer Institute for Dementia Research is on disease-mechanism oriented approaches with the potential to retard or slow progression of Alzheimer's disease and to improve cognitive function in these patients. Bayer's Pharmaceutical Division has several drugs at different stages of development for the treatment of dementia. News of the understanding was announced Wednesday at the Alzheimer's Association annual Rita Hayworth Gala in New York City. Bayer also agreed to fund a number of the Association's nationwide physician and caregiver education programs beginning in 1997. These programs will be designed to increase the awareness of the complexities of Alzheimer's disease, its diagnosis and current therapies as well as to help medical professionals and caregivers in the care of the Alzheimer patient. "Bayer is dedicated to improving health care around the world. We are optimistic that combining our resources in research with the Reagan Research Institute can accelerate progress toward improved treatment, or perhaps one day, prevention of Alzheimer's disease," said David Ebsworth, Ph.D., president of the Pharmaceutical Division of Bayer Corporation. Bayer Corporation, with headquarters in Pittsburgh, is a research-based company with major business in health care and life sciences, chemicals and imaging technologies. Its Pharmaceutical Division for North America is based in West Haven, Conn. Bayer Corporation is a member of the worldwide Bayer Group, a $31 billion chemical and pharmaceutical company based in Leverkusen, Germany. The Alzheimer's Association is the only national voluntary health organization dedicated to conquering Alzheimer's disease through research, and to providing support and assistance to those afflicted with the disease and their caregivers. The Association is the largest private funder of Alzheimer's research.
