Vernix Replicates Human Skin’s Natural Protective Properties

MONTREAL, QC -- Dec. 23, 1998 -- ProMetic Pharma’s Vernix, a new skin health product designed to provide a more effective method for people of all ages to manage dry skin caused by certain diseases, environmental elements and ageing, is available in Canada.

The product is designed to replicate the properties of vernix caseosa, the natural protective barrier found on new-born skin.

A healthy new-born has velvety-soft, radiant skin that can be attributed to the protective qualities of vernix caseosa. As people age, the sebaceous glands produce less lubrication, diminishing the skin’s natural ability to protect. This, combined with the everyday assault by the sun and wind, as well as soap and solvent use, can affect skin’s natural equilibrium. People who suffer from conditions such as eczema also wage a constant battle against dry and damaged skin.

"I like to call vernix caseosa the guardian angel of the skin, because it plays a role in infant survival," said Dr. Charles Lynde, director of the Lynde Centre for Dermatology and a dermatology consultant to several Toronto-area hospitals. "Vernix products are highly compatible with human skin. They contain the primary elements that help skin recreate its natural protective barrier."

Dry skin is a common problem with a wide range of products available to manage it. However, traditional lotions, creams and jellies do not tackle the root of the problem. The most commonly-used products are petrolatum-based. When applied they seal in moisture by creating a thin film over the skin. Vernix helps to restore the skin’s physiologic equilibrium. It contains the primary elements normally secreted by the epidermis (the outer layer of the skin), so it works naturally by helping the skin to replenish itself – to restore the body’s on moisture and regenerate its protective barrier.

"It was delivery room nurses who really gave me the idea for the development of Vernix," said Dr. Michel Côté, a Quebec City physician. "They appreciated how velvety soft vernix caseosa makes skin feel, so we analysed Mother Nature’s recipe and duplicated it."

By recreating this natural element, Vernix can prevent surface water loss, amplify moisture retention and improve skin equilibrium, which are essential for healthy skin.

Vernix has been used in a clinical setting by pediatricians, dermatologists, gynecologists, plastic surgeons and general practitioners for more than 10 years. It has been shown to be effective in preventing diaper rash, protecting and comforting minor burns, and soothing the nipples of breast feeding mothers.

"Vernix is an excellent concept," said Dr. Lynde. "It hydrates well, feels very nice on the skin and is unscented. It is definitely a product that will be beneficial to my patients."

The principal ingredient in Vernix is squalene, a natural-sourced substance which leaves skin soft without the greasy feeling seen with many conventional products. In more than 10 years of clinical use, Vernix has not caused any allergic reactions and has shown no incidence of sensitisation. It is also free of perfumes and colouring.
