Development Agreement Made for Brain Tumor Compound

SAN ANTONIO, Texas, Oct. 29, 1996 -- ILEX Oncology Inc. today announced it has entered into a comprehensive licensing agreement with Janssen Pharmaceutica, Inc. (Belgium), a wholly owned subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson, for the clinical development of crisnatol mesylate ("crisnatol"), a compound for the treatment of patients with glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), the most malignant of all brain tumors. The effectiveness of crisnatol is currently being evaluated in a phase-III clinical trial. In Phase-I/II trials, crisnatol has demonstrated significant clinical activity in patients with newly diagnosed and recurrent glioblastomas.

Of the approximately 18,000 new cases of primary malignant brain tumors diagnosed annually in the U.S., one quarter are glioblastoma multiforme (GBM). GBM is the most malignant of brain tumors, and is nearly always fatal with half of all patients dying within one year of diagnosis.

Under the agreement, Janssen will fund ILEX's clinical development of crisnatol up to regulatory marketing clearance, at which time Janssen will retain the exclusive rights to manufacture, market and sell crisnatol. As part of the terms, Janssen will make a series of milestone payments to ILEX, at regulatory submissions and approvals. Janssen will pay royalties to ILEX based on a percentage of annual net sales of crisnatol. In addition, ILEX announced that Johnson & Johnson Development Corporation is making an equity investment of $1 million in ILEX.

ILEX Oncology Inc. is dedicated to accelerating the development and commercial availability of pharmaceuticals for the treatment of patients with cancer. ILEX uses its unparalleled oncology drug development expertise to develop anticancer compounds under contract for and in partnership with other pharmaceutical and biotechnology firms. ILEX's close affiliation with San Antonio's Cancer Therapy & Research Center and with other leading cancer research institutions and experts ensures far-reaching and comprehensive access to the clinical expertise and patients necessary for the development of pharmaceuticals for patients with cancer.
