In this study, each drug showed a 31 percent reduction in total cholesterol and a 39 percent reduction in low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) at higher doses. Treatment was initiated at the recommended starting doses of each drug in this study and titrated to Lescol 80 mg or Lipitor 40 mg. At low doses, each drug showed significant reductions in total cholesterol, with a greater reduction demonstrated by Lipitor. This difference in treatment effect diminished as patients were titrated to high doses. "In this study we saw a wide range of cholesterol-lowering reductions with fluvastatin. This study also demonstrates that fluvastatin can achieve significant lipid-lowering effects at 80 mg," said Herbert Schuster, MD, Max-Delbrueck Center for Molecular Medicine, Berlin, Germany. "Not all patients require the same cholesterol reductions and their needs should drive statin choice and dosage." The randomized, double-blind trial was conducted at six centers in Germany in 120 men and women with elevated LDL-C >4.2 mmol/L (162.4 mg/dL) and triglyceride levels <3.4 mmol/L (400 mg/dL). Lescol was dosed at 20, 40 and 80 mg per day and Lipitor was given incrementally at 10, 20 and 40 mg per day. In this study, Lescol 80 mg was given as a single dose. However, Lescol 80 mg approval is based on a 40 mg dose taken twice a day. Treatment was initiated at the recommended starting doses for each drug and dosages were increased after four and eight weeks. Patient characteristics such as gender, baseline lipid values and compliance did not differ between the treatment and placebo groups. Related Links: Lescol and Lipitor
