EFNS MEETING: Zolmitriptan More Effective Than Sumatriptan For Migraine Treatment SEVILLE, SPAIN -- Sept. 22, 1998 -- Data presented yesterday at the third European Federation of Neurological Societies meeting showed that Zeneca Pharmaceuticals’ Zomig (zolmitriptan) 2.5 mg is significantly more effective than sumatriptan 50 mg in providing headache relief at two and four hours. A double-blind, randomised, multi-centre trial, enlisted 1,455 patients from 61 American research centres. A total of 6, 187 migraine attacks were treated with either Zomig or sumatriptan. Results of the story showed that Zomig was significantly more likely than sumatriptan 50 mg. To deliver a maintained headache response, providing patients with relief over a full 24-hour period. Headache response is defined as a reduction in pain from sever/moderate pre-treatment to mild/none at the time point specified after taking the drug. Further data showed that Zomig has a proven early onset of action, with a significantly higher headache response rate than placebo by 45 minutes. Twice as many patients taking Zomig (25 percent) reported a headache response than those who took placebo (12.4 percent). Other study results presented at the conference showed that eight out of 10 migraines headaches responded to initial treatment with Zomig at two hours. The overall pain-free response rates for all attacks of any intensity treated with Zomig was 70 percent. Similarly high headache response and pain-free rates were seen in menstrually-associated and non-menstrually associated attacks. Zomig is a novel, dual action 5-HT 1B:1D receptor agonist which, in pre-clinical studies, has been shown to cross the intact blood-brain barrier to act both peripherally and centrally in the brain. As well as the peripheral action on the blood vessels, Zomig acts centrally within the brain stem, which is though to be the location of the pain generator in migraine.
