New Genetic Markers for Breast and Ovarian Cancer

GAITHERSBURG, Md., Aug. 21, 1996 -- OncorMed, Inc. (AMEX: ONM) announced today that it has received a license for genetic markers for breast and ovarian cancer from the Regents of the University of California, whose patent application for these BRCA1 discoveries was recently allowed by the U.S. Patent Office. The University of California patent application is believed by the Company to be the first to have been allowed on BRCA1 genetic markers in the United States.

"We are delighted to have entered into a license with the University of California for BRCA1 genetic markers," stated Timothy J. Triche, MD, Ph.D., Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of OncorMed. "The discovery of a firm hereditary link to breast and ovarian cancer is one of the most significant findings for women's health in this century. OncorMed is proud to have the opportunity to develop and provide genetic testing services which utilize this important information to help physicians and their high risk patients make potentially life saving health care decisions."

Approximately 185,000 patients will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year. Five to 10% of breast cancer is inherited, with mutations in the BRCA1 gene accounting for about 45% of these cases and BRCA2 mutations accounting for about 35%. Women who are found to have a BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation have an 85% chance of developing breast cancer in their lifetime and a greatly increased risk of developing ovarian cancer (40-60% for BRCA1 and 15-20% for BRCA2). OncorMed is the only commercial laboratory currently providing genetic testing to identify mutations in both the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes.

OncorMed provides genetic testing and information services for the early detection and management of cancer. These services include hereditary cancer risk assessment, laboratory confirmation of genetic susceptibility to certain cancers (including breast, ovarian, colon, melanoma and thyroid), and monitoring through prognostic tests which help assess the spread of cancer and predict recurrence of disease. OncorMed markets its services to physicians, hospitals, cancer centers, managed care organizations, clinical laboratories, and other members of the medical community.
