At the same time the FDA has cleared for market a new 500 mg dosage strength. The first in a class of NSAIDs known as the pyranocarboxylic acids, Lodine has potent analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties and has a favorable gastrointestinal tolerability profile. The safety and efficacy of Lodine in relieving the signs and symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) were established in a three-year, double-blind, multicenter clinical trial involving 1,446 patients with active RA. Data from the study indicated that doses of Lodine at 1,000 mg/day were efficacious and well tolerated in patients being treated for active rheumatoid arthritis. Currently available in 200-mg and 300-mg capsules and 400-mg tablets, Wyeth-Ayerst will begin shipping new Lodine 500-mg tablets shortly. "Over a dozen controlled studies and years of clinical experience have shown Lodine to have strong anti-inflammatory action at various doses," said Marc W. Deitch, M.D., Senior Vice President, Medical Affairs and Medical Director, Wyeth-Ayerst Laboratories. "The 500-mg b.i.d. dose will provide physicians with a new option for managing patients with arthritis symptoms," Dr. Deitch added. As with other NSAIDs, the most common complaints relate to the GI tract. More than 5 million prescriptions were filled for Lodine in the United States in the last year, the majority for the management of osteoarthritis (OA). The new RA indication enables expanded usage of Lodine, which is already the second most-prescribed branded NSAID. NSAIDs represent a broad category of drugs that includes more than 20 marketed compounds and are considered first-line therapy for arthritis, a condition that affects one in seven Americans. Wyeth-Ayerst Laboratories is a major research-oriented pharmaceutical company with leading products in the areas of women's health care, cardiovascular and metabolic disease, central nervous system disease, anti-inflammatory disorders, vaccines, and generic pharmaceuticals. American Home Products Corporation ranks among the world leaders in sales of pharmaceuticals and healthcare products.
