PEPCID AC, First OTC Medication to Prevent Heartburn and Acid Indigestion

TORONTO, June 25, 1995 -- Johnson & Johnson - Merck Consumer Pharmaceuticals of Canada announces the launch of PEPCID AC(R) Acid Controller (TM), the first and only non-prescription medication that both relieves and prevents heartburn and acid indigestion.

"PEPCID AC(R) is the first H2 receptor antagonist to become available without a prescription in Canada and the first new product to emerge from Johnson & Johnson - Merck Consumer Pharmaceuticals of Canada,'' said Ian Lang, President of the company. For the millions of Canadians suffering from heartburn, it represents the most significant advance in the treatment of heartburn and acid indigestion since antacids were introduced more than 100 years ago.

Different from heartburn remedies

PEPCID AC(R) is not an antacid. Antacids neutralize some stomach acid and provide short term relief. PEPCID AC(R) is an acid controller. PEPCID AC(R) works by controlling the production of stomach acid. It can be used to either prevent heartburn or to treat the symptoms of heartburn when they occur. For prevention of symptoms, one tablet is taken one hour before consuming food or beverages expected to cause symptoms. For relief of symptoms, one tablet is taken when the symptoms of heartburn occur. And this one small tablet can control stomach acid production for up to 9 hours.

Not only is PEPCID AC(R) effective in controlling stomach acid, it features a remarkable safety profile(1). "It works directly to suppress stomach production of acid. Therefore, it can treat as well as prevent heartburn'' said Steve Balestrini, pharmacist. "PEPCID AC(R) is also a well tolerated product. It has no known clinically significant interactions with other drugs. That's particularly important for older patients with heartburn who may be taking other medications.''

A proven track record

PEPCID AC(R) is a competitive inhibitor of histamine H2 receptors, PEPCID AC(R) reduces the volume of acid and pepsin content of basal, nocturnal and stimulated gastric secretion. Prescription H2 blockers have been safely used in Canada by millions of people since 1977 to treat acid related disorders such as duodenal and gastric ulcers, reflux esophagitis and other hypersecretory conditions. PEPCID AC(R) contains a low dose (10mg) of the ingredient famotidine. Extensive clinical testing has shown that PEPCID AC(R) is both effective and safe in controlling stomach acid. As a result, with one small PEPCID AC(R) tablet, heartburn sufferers can relieve and prevent symptoms and control stomach acid virtually all day or all night.

Dedicated to providing information

PEPCID AC(R) is supported by an Information Centre that can be reached from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM by dialing 1-800-4PEPCID. It is dedicated to helping consumers and professionals in their search for additional information on heartburn, acid indigestion, causes of heartburn, important lifestyle changes and the use of PEPCID AC(R) Acid Controller(TM).
