Uristat Tablets, New Urinary Pain Relief Now Available OTC

RARITAN, N.J., June 18, 1996 -- For the millions of women who suffer from urinary pain and discomfort, relief is as close as their nearest retail pharmacy or supermarket shelf.

A new product, URISTAT(TM) Tablets, available over the counter from Advanced Care Products, a Johnson & Johnson (NYSE: JNJ) company, provides rapid, effective relief from the painful, burning symptoms of urinary tract infections (UTIs). In the next year, an estimated 26 million women will suffer from the frustrating symptoms often associated with UTIs.

Fast and effective, URISTAT relieves the pain but is not a cure; only a doctor can treat a UTI. However, URISTAT, from the makers of MONISTAT(R), enables women to go on with their lives comfortably, relieved of the painful symptoms and urgency of a UTI, until they can see their doctors for treatment of the underlying infection. This specially formulated analgesic contains the active ingredient phenazopyridine hydrochloride, the same ingredient doctors have been prescribing to relieve urinary pain and discomfort for more than 60 years.

"For years, doctors have been prescribing the same analgesic in URISTAT along with antibiotics to treat UTIs. URISTAT empowers women to play a role in their personal health care by enabling them to manage their symptoms from the very first sign of trouble until they can see their doctor," said David Vinjamuri, Product Director, Advanced Care Products. "However, it's important to remember that URISTAT provides temporary relief from symptoms only. Even though they'll experience relief from pain and the urgency to urinate, women still need to see their doctor to diagnose and treat the underlying cause."

If a UTI is left untreated, the infection can spread into the kidneys, resulting in a more serious medical condition. Another reason to see a doctor is because urinary pain can also have other causes, such as Pelvic Inflammatory Disease.

URISTAT rapidly goes to work in the urinary tract system to provide relief at the source of the pain. Common home remedies, such as drinking water or cranberry juice, are used by nine of 10 women in an attempt to flush out the infection, but don't help relieve the pain nor are they a proven treatment. URISTAT, however, works to relieve the pain and related symptoms until a doctor can treat the infection.

"In most cases, a physician prescribes antibiotics to kill the bacteria that cause UTIs," said Kristene E. Whitmore, M.D., Chief of Urology, Graduate Hospital, Philadelphia, and co-author of Overcoming Bladder Disorders. "But research shows that as many as 80 percent of UTI sufferers will wait up to three days to contact their physician; they then must usually wait a day or more for the antibiotics to start to work. Women should contact their doctor as soon as they experience symptoms. URISTAT provides effective, interim relief from the pain and burning associated with a UTI."

"I get chronic bladder infections -- usually on the weekends -- and would normally be pulling my hair out," said Jill S., a frequent UTI sufferer. "I used URISTAT and it made me feel more comfortable right away, until I could get in to see my doctor."

Because URISTAT contains the same analgesic doctors prescribe for urinary pain and urgency, UTI sufferers may be familiar with the bright reddish-orange discoloration of the urine, a sign that it's working.

URISTAT is marketed by Advanced Care Products, a Johnson & Johnson company. Johnson & Johnson is the world's largest and most comprehensive manufacturer of health care products serving the consumer, pharmaceutical, diagnostics and professional markets. Johnson & Johnson has 160 operating companies in 50 countries around the world, selling products in more than 175 nations.
