Breathe Right Nasal Strips Cleared by FDA

MINNEAPOLIS, June 11, 1996 -- CNS, Inc., (Nasdaq-NNM: CNXS) today announced that it has received clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to market Breathe Right(R) nasal strips for the temporary relief of breathing difficulties due to deviated nasal septum. The company previously received clearance to market the product for the reduction or elimination of snoring and for the temporary relief of nasal congestion.

Approximately 12 million people in the United States are bothered by symptoms related to a deviated nasal septum -- a bend in the cartilage and/or bone which divides the nostrils. These symptoms include a blockage to airflow through one nostril, difficulty sleeping, nasal discharge, headaches, loud breathing or snoring, dry nose and nose bleeds. Frequently, a deviated septum will further complicate nasal symptoms related to allergies and sinus disease. Treatment has been primarily limited to surgical correction.

"Although Breathe Right nasal strips should not be considered an alternative to definitive surgical correction, many people who have symptoms related to a deviated septum are bothered mostly at night, when nasal strips can provide temporary relief," said Dr. Dan Cohen, chairman and chief executive officer of CNS. "This is especially useful for individuals who either are not good surgical candidates or who wish to avoid surgery."

Richard Jahnke, CNS president and chief operating officer, said, "Although use of this new claim for promoting Breathe Right strips may appear on future packaging and promotional materials, particularly as they relate to the professional medical market, we plan to advertise the product to consumers primarily as a treatment for snoring and nasal congestion for the foreseeable future."

CNS, based in Minneapolis, designs, manufactures and markets consumer products, including the Breathe Right nasal strip. The Breathe Right strip improves breathing by reducing nasal airflow resistance. It can be effective in eliminating or reducing snoring, and for the temporary relief of nasal congestion. The company also has entered into several agreements to market or license certain new medical consumer products that are in various stages of evaluation and testing.
