Imitrex is the only migraine treatment available in three different formulations: injection, which provides relief in as early as 10 minutes; nasal spray as soon as 15 minutes; and tablets as early as 30 minutes. This family of treatment options available from Glaxo Wellcome offers migraine sufferers and their physicians flexibility in treatment, depending upon severity of attack, need for fast relief and desire for convenience. Imitrex is a powerful, selective serotonin (5-HT(1)) receptor-agonist indicated for the acute treatment of migraine attacks with or without aura in adults. It has been used to treat more than 160 million migraine attacks in eight million patients world-wide. When introduced in 1993, Imitrex Injection was the first medication specifically formulated in 50 years for the acute treatment of migraine. "When patients are asked what is most important in migraine treatment, they want a medication that works well and works quickly," said Robert Kaniecki, M.D., director of the Allegheny General Headache Center and lead author of the review study. "These study results on Imitrex offer hope for patients because they address both effectiveness and speed of relief from migraine. Now we can tell our patients that no matter which formulation of Imitrex they prefer, they can feel confident that they will experience consistent, rapid relief." In a review of four parallel-group, placebo-controlled clinical trials including a total of 1,262 patients, Imitrex Injection (6 mg) was found to be effective at providing headache relief from migraine as early as 10 minutes after dosing. A review of five controlled trials with 3,155 patients proved that Imitrex Nasal Spray (20 mg) offered relief as early as 15 minutes after dosing. In a separate trial of 1,003 patients, Imitrex Tablet (50 mg and 100 mg) alleviated pain as early as 30 minutes after dosing. Imitrex should only be used where a clear diagnosis of migraine has been established. It is not intended for the prophylactic therapy of migraine or for use in the management of basilar or hemiplegic migraine. Imitrex is contraindicated in patients with history, symptoms or signs of ischemic cardiac, cerebrovascular or peripheral vascular syndromes, or other significant underlying cardiovascular diseases. Patients who experience signs or symptoms of coronary vasospasm or other vasospastic reactions following Imitrex should be evaluated before receiving additional doses. Therefore, patients with risk factors for heart disease should be evaluated by a physician to determine if Imitrex is appropriate therapy. Imitrex Injection is contraindicated in patients with uncontrolled hypertension because it may increase blood pressure. More information on: Glaxo Wellcome, Imitrex
