New One-Dose Monistat Available In The U.S.

SKILLMAN, NJ -- June 15, 1998 -- A one-dose version of Personal Products Co.’s vaginal yeast infection treatment, called Monistat® 1 (tioconazole), is now available in the U.S.

The vast majority of women -- nearly 75 percent -- will develop a vaginal yeast infection during their lifetime. A yeast infection is a common type of vaginal infection caused mainly by an overgrowth of the yeast called Candida albicans. Candida is always present in the vagina, but when the normal pH balance of the vagina changes, or when the hormonal balance changes, the fungus can multiply.

A number of factors -- including high levels of stress, antibiotic use, uncontrolled diabetes mellitus and wearing wet or tight clothing -- can lead to an overgrowth of this fungus and cause a yeast infection. The burning and discomfort of the infection usually will be present as long as the overgrowth of fungus remains.

Monistat 1 is 300 mg of tioconazole ointment in a prefilled applicator. Tioconazole, the active ingredient, is in the same chemical family as miconazole -- the active ingredient in Monistat(R) 3 and Monistat(R) 7 -- and has a similar safety and efficacy profile.

Monistat 1 treats at the site of a yeast infection and provides an advantage over current oral one-dose treatments, which are systemic, meaning they must travel through the entire blood stream before treating the yeast infection. The systemic nature of these treatments can lead to adverse reactions (gastrointestinal discomfort, changes in liver function) and interactions with other common medicines, such as oral hypoglycemics and antihistamines. Vaginal therapies such as Monistat 1 work directly at the site of the infection, and usually do not cause these side effects.

Also now available is Monistat(R) 3 Cream, a three-day formulation featuring three individually wrapped cream-filled applicators. Monistat 3 Cream provides pre-measured dosing, which means less mess and no need to clean the applicator.
