Prandin, New Oral Treatment For Type II Diabetes, Now Available In The US

PRINCETON, NJ -- June 8, 1998 -- Novo Nordisk Pharmaceuticals, Inc.’s Prandin(TM) (repaglinide) tablets, a new oral antidiabetic agent for treatment of type II diabetes, is now available in the United States.

Prandin is indicated as an adjunct to diet and exercise to lower the blood glucose in patients with type II diabetes mellitus whose hyperglycemia cannot be controlled satisfactorily by diet and exercise alone. It is also indicated for use in combination with metformin to lower blood glucose in patients who cannot be controlled by exercise, diet and Prandin or metformin alone, as the two products demonstrate a synergistic effect.

Prandin has demonstrated a low incidence of severe hypoglycemia. In one-year controlled trials comparing Prandin with sulfonylureas for efficacy and safety, none of the Prandin-treated patients with symptomatic hypoglycemia developed coma or required hospitalisation.

Prandin is available in 0.5 mg, 1 mg and 2 mg tablets. Studies are currently underway to evaluate Prandin in combination with other drugs.

In the US, Prandin is co-promoted by Novo Nordisk Pharmaceuticals, Inc. and Schering-Plough Corp. Prandin was developed in co-operation with the German pharmaceutical company Boehringer Ingelheim.
