Dr. David Millson from Zeneca Pharmaceuticals described how patients are caught up in a cycle of migraine, experiencing not only the pain of the attack, which can last up to three days, but also suffering from disability brought about by fear of the next attack. He added this can be broken when patients are offered an effective and reliable treatment like Zomig. Migraine symptoms include recurrent intense headache which can last between four and 72 hours, visual and aural disturbances and vomiting. The fear of a further attack adversely affects the patients lifestyle, reducing their ability to lead a normal life. Many patients try to avoid certain trigger factors, such as smoke, some foods, noise and emotional pressure and others are concerned that they may suffer an attack while driving the car. Work is adversely affected too, with many patients having to take days off. One survey showed that between 1.9 and 3.3 days work per year were lost due to migraine and the equivalent of 5.8 days were lost due to impairment of effectiveness at work. The new study of more than 2,449 patients shows that, after two hours, eight out of 10 of their migraine attacks are successfully treated with Zomig. The study further demonstrated that in patients taking Zomig for 20 or more attacks, in 85 percent there is a headache response at two hours and patients are pain free in 69 percent of attacks at two hours. This differentiates Zomig from repeated response rates from other open-label studies in currently available triptans ranging from 55 percent at two hours to 68 percent at four hours. In a further study, data shows that Zomig maintains pain relief for 24 hours reducing the need for a second dose or other rescue meditation. More information on: Zomig and Zeneca Pharmaceuticals.
