AmBisome Approved In New Zealand, DaunoXome Approved In Australia

BOULDER, CO -- April 27, 1998 -- NeXstar Pharmaceuticals Inc. has received two drug approvals today in New Zealand and Australia as the New Zealand Ministry of Health has approved AmBisome (liposomal amphotericin B) for use as a secondary treatment for systemic (blood-borne) fungal infections and Australia’s Therapeutic Goods Administration has approved DaunoXome (liposomal daunorubicin) as a first-line treatment for advanced, HIV-related Kaposi's sarcoma, one of the most common skin cancers contracted by individuals with HIV.

Patients at risk for systemic fungal infections include those with compromised immune systems, such as patients receiving cancer treatment, HIV-infected individuals and bone marrow transplant patients. Patients afflicted with systemic fungal infections typically exhibit low levels of infection-fighting white blood cells and fever that does not resolve with antibiotic treatment.

To date, 33 countries have approved AmBisome for use in treating life- threatening fungal infections and 22 countries have approved DaunoXome as a treatment for HIV-related Kaposi's sarcoma.
