The researchers recruited 60 men and 41 women hospitalized for alcohol dependence and followed up with them monthly for one year to assess the effect of depression on drinking. They found that men and women did not differ significantly in their return to drinking, a result different from other studies. The authors add that these results support previous work demonstrating that a careful psychiatric diagnostic assessment is necessary to provide optimal treatment for alcohol-dependent patients.
