Anadrol-50 Anabolic Treatment for Anemia Available In U.S.

BUFFALO GROVE, IL -- March 17, 1998 -- Unimed Pharmaceuticals’ Anadrol(R)-50 (oxymetholone) 50 mg tablets is now available in the United States to help combat the debilitating effects of anemia in chronically-ill patients.

The drug, which is the only oral anabolic-androgenic hormone indicated for the treatment of anemia, offers a balanced anabolic agent that is more convenient and less expensive compared to other available medications.

"Because of its oral formulation and balanced blend of anabolic and mild androgenic activity, Anadrol-50 provides a safe, effective and convenient alternative for patients who experience physical pain or personal inconvenience from current injectable anti-anemic therapies," said Corklin Steinhart, MD, adjunct assistant professor at University of Miami School of Medicine.

Studies show that a majority of patients with chronic disease, including HIV/AIDS, cancer, lupus, aplastic anemia, rheumatoid arthritis and inflammatory bowel disease, suffer from anemia. In general, anemia is a result of the blood's incapacity to carry the necessary amount of oxygen for cell production and growth to the body's tissues due to a shortage of red blood cells.

Often the therapies prescribed to treat these illnesses, such as AZT, dapsone, cancer chemotherapy, gold salts, phenothiazines, phenytoin, sulfonamides and penicillins, suppress the bone marrow and red blood cell production, thereby contributing to the onset of anemia.

"Anadrol may be particularly useful in these patients to reverse the effects of anemia early on to help avoid changes or limitations in other life-saving therapies," Dr. Steinhart said.

Patients with chronic renal failure also experience anemia due to the kidney's inability to produce erythropoietin, the body's signal to the bone marrow to increase red blood cell production. These patients, as well as those suffering from congenital bone marrow depression, rely on the strength provided by red blood cells for survival. In addition to fatigue and lethargy, anemic patients frequently experience weakness, light-headedness or dizziness.

Anadrol-50 helps patients with anemia restore their energy and regain strength lost due to a decreased amount of red blood cells. Anadrol-50 helps stimulate red blood cell production by enhancing the release of the body's own erythropoietin, as well as directly signalling the stem cells within the bone marrow to produce red cells.

"In addition to increasing red blood cell production, anabolic hormones have historically been associated with sustaining protein mass and protein building to help patients gain overall strength and overcome the side effects of anemia," Dr. Steinhart explained.

Anadrol-50 comes in scored 50 mg tablets to be taken orally each day. Anadrol-50 does not require an injection and is less expensive than Oxandrin(R) and other anti-anemics, such as blood growth factors for the reproduction of red blood cells. However, Anadrol-50 should not replace other supportive measures such as transfusion, correction of iron, folic acid, vitamin B12, or pyridoxine deficiency, antibacterial therapy and the appropriate use of corticosteroids.

Anabolic hormones are synthetic derivatives of testosterone. Their main function generally is to stimulate the synthesis of cellular protein. In addition to their ability to stimulate red blood cell production, some anabolics have been shown to sustain protein mass and promote protein building and retention.

Anadrol-50 is a controlled substance (Category III) and, as with all prescription medications, must be used under the supervision of a physician. Peliosis hepatis, liver cell tumours and blood lipid changes associated with the increased risk of atherosclerosis have been reported in patients receiving androgenic anabolic steroids.

Contraindications to their use include known or suspected carcinoma of the prostate or breast (male), carcinoma of the breast in females with hypercalcemia (androgenic anabolic steroids may stimulate osteolytic bone resorption), pregnancy (oxymetholone can cause fetal harm when administered to pregnant women), nephrosis or nephrotic phase of nephritis, hypersensitivity to the drug and severe hepatic dysfunction.
