The interim announcement follows a recent meeting of key investigators which reviewed a preliminary statistical analysis of study results. The conclusion of the investigators was that these results, based on data from 68 patients treated for up to 78 weeks, were extremely positive. Two groups of patients were treated. In patients not previously exposed to any anti-cancer therapy, the positive response rate was 52%. Significantly, patients who had previously failed to respond to BCG, considered to be standard therapy for carcinoma in-situ of the bladder, the response rate was 22%. In addition, tolerance and safety as measured by side effects, were lower with Regressin than those reported in the medical literature for BCG. ``While further data will be released to the medical community by the principal investigator, these results reinforce our belief that Regressin is an efficacious product for the treatment of carcinoma in situ of the bladder and has a margin of safety over other products currently in use,'' said Marvin Skripitsky, Bioniche President and Chief Executive Officer. ``It is particularly important that Regressin appears to be effective in many patients who have failed BCG which is usually used to treat this concerning disease,'' he added. ``We are committed to the filing of a Regressin New Drug Submission in Canada for treatment of C.I.S. Plans for further clinical trials are still under development.'' Bioniche Inc.
