(NYSE: RPR) announced today that it has received approval from the Russian Ministry of Health to market three of its drugs in Russia, the largest of the now-independent countries which once formed the Soviet Union. Russia has a population of nearly 150 million. Azmacort(R) (triamcinolone acetonide) has been approved as a treatment to control symptoms of bronchial asthma in patients requiring chronic treatment with inhaled corticosteroids. Nasacort(R) (triamcinolone acetonide), an intranasal corticosteroid, will be indicated for the treatment of symptoms of seasonal or perennial allergic rhinitis, commonly known as hay fever. Dilacor(R) XR (diltiazem, sustained release), a calcium channel blocker, was approved for the management of hypertension (high blood pressure) and angina pectoris. RPR expects to make all three available in Russia by the end of this year. "Obtaining these approvals is an important step toward meeting unmet medical needs around the world, particularly in emerging markets like Russia," according to RPR officials. "Because Azmacort and Nasacort are the most prescribed drugs in their categories in the United States, where they are currently marketed, and Dilacor XR is one of RPR's fastest growing products, we believe they can have similar impact in Russia." Asthma is a chronic inflammatory lung disease that causes shortness of breath, wheezing, tightness in the chest and/or recurrent cough. Already one of the most common chronic diseases in the world, there is evidence that the incidence of asthma is increasing worldwide. Although it is often thought of as a mild disease, tens of thousands of people die from acute asthma attacks each year around the world. Allergic rhinitis is an inflammatory disease of the nasal mucous membrane that results from exposure to inhaled pollen -- most prevalent in spring and early summer -- or dust mites, mold and other allergens present year-round. Symptoms include nasal and throat itchiness, nasal congestion, runny nose, sneezing and itchy watery eyes. While not life-threatening, these symptoms often take an enormous and costly toll on society due to time and productivity lost from school and work. High blood pressure and angina pectoris are leading indicators and risk factors for heart attack and death. Rhone-Poulenc Rorer Inc. is a global pharmaceutical company dedicated to improving human health through the discovery, development, manufacturing and marketing of human pharmaceuticals. Nasacort has also received approval in Brazil for the same indication. CONTACT: Jim Weiss, 33-1-40-91-67-12, or Bob Pearson, 610-454-3872, both of Rhone-Poulenc Rorer (RPR)
