Abelcet Receives Marketing Approval in Norway

PRINCETON, NJ -- December 29, 1997 -- The Norwegian Medicines Control Authorities have approved the commercial sale of The Liposome Company, Inc.'s anti-fungal medication Abelcet(R) (Amphotericin B Lipid Complex Injection).

The drug is indicated for the treatment of severe, invasive, fungal infections in patients who have not responded to conventional amphotericin B or other systemic antifungal therapy, or for patients in whom kidney toxicity has developed because of treatment with conventional amphotericin B or where the use of amphotericin B is contraindicated because there is suspicion that it may reduce renal function.

Abelcet is the only lipid-based formulation of amphotericin B to receive approval in Norway. It will be promoted by Wyeth-Ayerst Nordiska, a division of American Home Products Corporation, in accordance with a marketing agreement between The Liposome Company and Wyeth-Ayerst.

Norway brings to 18 the number of countries in which Abelcet has been approved for marketing. Because of its innovative lipid complex technology, the drug is able to deliver much higher doses of amphotericin B while reducing the amount of kidney toxicity. The usefulness of conventional amphotericin B, generally considered the treatment of choice for severe fungal infections, is often limited by its potential to cause damage to the kidneys.
