Bayer Introduces 10-Test Blood Glucose Meter For Diabetics

TORONTO, ON. -- October 6, 1997 -- Bayer Inc. today announced the launch of the Glucometer(R) DEX(TM) blood glucose monitoring system, now giving Canadians with diabetes a more accurate and efficient measurement tool with better control over the testing process and the convenience of a multi-test system.

Glucometer DEX is the only self-monitoring blood glucose (SMBG) system available that allows people with diabetes the ability to test 10 times in a row through a unique self-calibrating 10-test cartridge. The disc-shaped Glucometer DEX houses the 10-test sensor cartridge, completely eliminating the need to fuss with individual test sensors. When 10 tests are completed, another cartridge is simply popped into the meter, making the process of blood glucose testing easier and more convenient than ever.

According to the Canadian Diabetes Association, 1.5 million Canadians have been diagnosed with diabetes and it continues to be a leading cause of death in Canada. As insulin was discovered more than 75 years ago, many people assume diabetes has been cured. The truth is diabetes is inadequately controlled in Canada. In fact, four out of every 10 people with diabetes will eventually develop serious complications such as blindness, heart attacks, stroke, kidney disease and amputations.

“We have increasing evidence that controlling blood sugar levels will help to prevent diabetes-related complications,” said Dr. Lawrence Leiter, staff endocrinologist at St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto. “We recommend that all persons with diabetes monitor their blood glucose levels regularly to help control their blood sugar.”

People with diabetes often complain that current blood testing procedures are inconvenient. Glucometer DEX offers a range of unprecedented convenience and efficiency features to help people with diabetes get a handle on their blood glucose levels. These include:

-- the only meter with a state-of-the-art 10-test cartridge offering patients the ability to test up to 10 times in a row
-- a self-calibrating cartridge which eliminates the need for handling of test sensors and minimizes the potential for human error
-- quick test results in only 30 seconds
-- MicroEase(TM) sampling which actually draws up the exact amount of blood needed
-- the ability to provide four time-specific blood glucose averages -- a significant feature which can make insulin adjustment according to pattern easier and more convenient
-- an electronic memory which can record up to 100 test results for ongoing tracking and management of glucose levels by the patient and physician
-- downloading capability to Glucometer DEX software data management program for a more in-depth analysis of blood glucose patterns.

According to Kim Barwise, a Toronto-based diabetes nurse educator CDE (Certified Diabetes Educator), there are many important factors people with diabetes need to consider in order to manage the condition effectively, including: accepting the condition and knowing that you can live a healthy life; eating nutritionally and regularly; taking medication as prescribed; and managing stress. A blood glucose meter like Glucometer DEX is an important management tool to help assess how these factors work together to keep the person with diabetes healthy.

"In the past, managing blood sugar levels meant cumbersome and time-consuming test devices. Today, devices such as Glucometer DEX make it easier for people with diabetes to test their blood sugar levels quickly and accurately and get on with their day," Barwise said. "For people with diabetes who want to be active participants in the management of their condition, glucometer DEX makes blood sugar testing an easy and comprehensive procedure."
