Study Shows Nasacort Better Than Claritin In Improving Nasal Symptoms

BERLIN – September 23, 1997 -- A study showing the superiority of Nasacort(R) AQ (triamcinolone acetonide) over Claritin(R) (loratadine) in reducing total nasal symptoms, nasal congestion, nasal itch and sneezing was presented at the European Respiratory Society meeting in Berlin.

Presented by William Storms, M.D., associate clinical professor of medicine at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, Denver, this four-week, double-blind, randomized, multicenter study included 351 patients with seasonal allergic rhinitis. Patients were given Nasacort AQ, 220 mcg once daily, or Claritin, 10 mg once daily. Patients were asked to record the severity of their nasal and ocular symptoms on daily diary cards, using a four-point severity scale.

Both groups of patients showed improvement from baseline in nasal and ocular symptoms as early as day one. However, at end point, Nasacort AQ was shown to be significantly more effective than Claritin in reducing total nasal symptoms, nasal congestion, nasal itch and sneezing. Improvement in ocular symptoms was similar in the two groups.

Patients were also asked to rate their quality of life, using a seven-point intensity scale. The results were assessed at baseline and at days 14 and 28. Quality of life included activity, emotions, practical problems, sleep, eye symptoms, nasal symptoms and non-hay-fever symptoms.

With regard to activity, emotions, nasal symptoms, practical problems and overall quality of life, at day 14, the patient population treated with Nasacort AQ reported significantly better quality of life than the population treated with Claritin. Except for emotions, this difference was maintained at day 28.

Nasacort AQ, developed and marketed by Rhone-Poulenc Rorer, is a once-daily, odorless, taste-free, water-based formulation of the active ingredient triamcinolone acetonide.
