| | | ![]() Active Treatment Of Diabetes Can Reduce Complications BOSTON -- June 23, 1997 -- Today from the American Diabetes Association (ADA) Annual Meeting comes valuable news for the nearly 16 million Americans living with diabetes. Eli Lilly and Co. joins the ADA in recognizing a premeal blood-sugar level of 140 mg/dL as the point at which individuals need to “take action” to more aggressively treat their disease in an effort to reduce or prevent complications. For many people with diabetes, premeal blood-sugar levels consistently above 140 mg/dL can result in complications, including blurry vision or blindness, fatigue, frequent urination, poor circulation, heart disease, kidney failure, nerve disease and impotence. Diabetes research studies show that maintaining consistent blood-sugar levels as close to normal as possible can reduce the complications associated with diabetes. Eli Lilly and Co. has introduced Know Your Number, a national education effort, to reach people with diabetes across the country and urge them to take control of their condition. Know Your Number is designed to create awareness and motivate people with diabetes to prevent their premeal blood-sugar level from consistently rising above 140 mg/dL. Diabetes Facts: --Nearly 16 million people across the United States have diabetes --Half of the people with diabetes do not know they have the disease "Diabetes is the fourth leading cause of death by disease in the United States, but preventing or reducing the complications is possible," said Frank Vinicor, M.D., M.P.H., director of the Division of Diabetes Translation at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. "We all need to view diabetes as a serious condition and actively participate in improving diabetes management, which starts with regular blood-sugar monitoring." With physician education and direct-to-patient outreach, Lilly is encouraging people with diabetes to seek the best possible care. Know Your Number stresses that people with diabetes need to take control of their disease by consistently monitoring their blood-sugar level and playing an active role in managing their disease. Blood-sugar monitoring, exercise habits, nutrition and medication are important elements for all people with diabetes to address with their doctor at each visit. "Lilly’s Know Your Number education outreach provides people with the information they need to work with their physician so that together they can take control of diabetes," said Randall L. Tobias, Lilly’s chairman and chief executive officer. "As a person with Type II diabetes, I know the importance of good glycemic control and how much better I feel when I properly manage my diabetes."
