The recommended adult dosage for this indication is Cipro 500 mg every 12 hours for 10 days. The acute sinusitis indication, which expands the clinician's choice in treating upper respiratory infections, joins Cipro's long list of indications for the treatment of a wide variety of infectious diseases in adults, including lower respiratory infections, urinary tract infections, chronic bacterial prostatitis, intra-abdominal infections (with metronidazole), bone and joint infections, and skin and skin structure infections. "This indication represents yet another example of Bayer's continued commitment to expanding treatment options in infectious disease," said Dr. Steven Jungerwirth, Director, Anti-Infective Medical Research, Bayer Corporation, Pharmaceutical Division. "It validates Cipro's efficacy against common respiratory pathogens, including susceptible strains of Streptococcus pneumoniae." "Treating common respiratory infections, like acute sinusitis, is becoming more challenging as the frequency of penicillin-resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae continues to rise," Jungerwirth explains. "Also increasing, is resistance to other traditional antimicrobial agents among prevalent gram-negative respiratory pathogens, such as Haemophilus influenzae and Moraxella catarrhalis. In light of these challenges, Cipro offers physicians and patients an important therapeutic alternative." Sinusitis, a bacterial infection of the mucous membranes lining the nasal sinus cavities, affects an estimated 35 million people each year, making it one of the most common infections in the United States. Acute sinusitis is often underdiagnosed. Since symptoms can be difficult to distinguish from colds or allergies, many sufferers never see a doctor for proper diagnosis and antimicrobial treatment. The FDA cleared the acute sinusitis indication for Cipro tablets on June 3, 1997 after reviewing the supplemental new drug application.
