![]() SAN ANTONIO and DALLAS, Texas -- May 23, 1997 -- ILEX(TM) Oncology, Inc., the only drug development company focused exclusively on cancer therapy, and Physician Reliance Network, Inc. (PRN), the largest oncology practice management company in the U.S., have entered into a comprehensive five-year development agreement with Eli Lilly and Company for the clinical development of two anticancer compounds, the companies announced today. The partnership represents one of the most innovative and comprehensive collaborations in the oncology drug development arena. As part of the agreement, the Cancer Therapy and Research Center (CTRC) Research Foundation will conduct preclinical and clinical research. "Our unique alliance with Lilly, PRN and CTRC Research -- integrating contract research, consultative trial design service and patient access -- enables us to more effectively deal with clinical trial design issues, patient accrual and data management. This marks a major advance toward significantly reducing cancer drug development time while maintaining the highest standards of data quality," said Richard Love, President and CEO, ILEX Oncology, Inc. "It is particularly gratifying for ILEX to participate in this partnership, as it demonstrates our ability to execute large-scale development programs and truly provide solutions for accelerated drug development," Mr. Love added. Bob Whren, Executive Vice President, Subsidiary Operations, PRN, stated, "We are excited to offer trial design expertise and serve as a clinical research site for the development of these important compounds. This collaboration reflects PRN's commitment to provide patients access to the latest therapeutic advances, and the convenience of participating in clinical trials close to home." Annually, physicians affiliated with PRN treat more than 50,000 new cancer patients. Under the agreement, ILEX Oncology will serve as the contract research organization (CRO) for Lilly, managing the clinical development of both compounds -- from phase I through phase III. PRN and CTRC Research will participate in clinical trial design and serve as research trial sites. Dr. Daniel D. Von Hoff, who provides leadership to ILEX, PRN and CTRC Research, brings extensive expertise in protocol design and product development. "We have streamlined the development process," explained Kathy Heck, Director of Clinical Research Services at ILEX. "Working in concert with Lilly's scientists, we were able to develop protocols within weeks. We are enrolling patients four months after our initial protocol development meeting." Commenting on the agreement, Homer L. Pearce, Ph.D., Vice President, Cancer Research and Clinical Investigation at Lilly, stated, "We are delighted to join ILEX, PRN, and CTRC in a collaboration to expedite the clinical development of two of the investigational drugs in Lilly's oncology pipeline. This collaboration allows all parties to exploit their great strengths in drug development in order to bring new therapies to the cancer patient."
