Combined Influenza, Meningitis Vaccine Safe for Preterm Infants: Presented at ESPID

By Jenny Powers

NICE, France -- May 12, 2010 -- Preterm infants vaccinated with the Haemophilus influenzae type B-Neisseria meningitidis serogroup C vaccine (Hib-MenC [Menitorix]) demonstrate high levels of bactericidal antibodies when HiB-MenC is coadministered with other recommended vaccines.

In addition, the vaccine was well tolerated in preterm infants, researchers said here at the 28th Annual Meeting of the European Society for Paediatric Infectious Diseases (ESPID) on May 7.

Félix Omeñaca, MD, Hospital La Paz, Madrid, Spain, and colleagues compared the safety and immunogenicity of Hib-MenC in preterm infants (n = 163) with that of full-term infants (n = 150).

The infants received the Hib-MenC vaccine at age 2, 4, and 6 months, along with other routine vaccinations.

Blood samples were collected prior to the first vaccination and 1 month after the third dose.

Following the third dose, no differences between preterm and full-term infants regarding seroprotection or seropositivity rates were observed.

The vaccine elicited similar immune response to the Hib and MenC antigens in preterm and full-term infants.

Irritability, drowsiness, and injection-site pain were the most commonly reported adverse events.

Serious adverse events were reported in 10 preterm and 7 full-term infants included malnutrition (n = 1), bronchospasm (n = 1), and infections (n = 15).

There was 1 death due to meningococcal serogroup-B sepsis in a full term infant, which was determined to be unrelated to vaccine.

Funding for this study was provided by GlaxoSmithKline.
