A total of 265 patients were treated with 177Lu-octreotate and asked to complete the QOL questionnaire C30 version 3.0 of the European Organization for the Research and Treatment of Cancer. “Self-reported QOL is considered an important outcome for the effect of treatment nowadays, regardless of treatment outcome,” wrote researchers from Erasmus University Rotterdam, Rotterdam, the Netherlands. Patient-based differences of at least 10 points in scores before and after treatment were regarded as a significant clinical improvement in QOL and symptoms (analysis of variance, P <= .05). Other signs of clinical improvement were a 3 kg weight gain, an increase of at least 10 points on the Karnofsky Performance Scale (KPS), and a decrease of >=50% in serum chromogranin A. “Overall, a significant improvement in QOL and symptoms of insomnia, diarrhoea, and appetite loss was seen independently of the clinical outcome,” the authors reported. In the subgroup of patients with remission, KPS and fatigue improved significantly as well. In patients who had symptoms before therapy, nausea and vomiting improved by 70%, and diarrhoea improved by 67%. The researchers concluded that 177Lu-octreotate therapy not only affects tumour growth and overall survival but also improves symptoms and QOL after therapy.
