| | | ![]() Quetiapine Improves Sleep Disturbance in Patients With Depression: Presented at EPA By Jenny Powers MUNICH, Germany -- March 1, 2010 -- Patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) showed significant improvement in sleep disturbances, especially reduced sleep, after treatment with quetiapine extended release (XR), researchers said here at the European Psychiatric Association (EPA) 18th European Congress of Psychiatry. Borwin Bandelow, MD, Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy, University of Goettingen, Goettingen, Germany, presented data from 4 studies on February 28. Dr. Bandelow and colleagues analysed pooled data from 4 placebo-controlled studies (D1448C00001, D1448C00002, D1448C00003, D1448C00004) evaluating the efficacy of quetiapine XR 50 to 300 mg/day (taken in the evening), compared with placebo, in 2,116 patients with MDD and sleep disturbances. The post hoc analyses assessed changes in the Montgomery-Asberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS) item 4 (reduced sleep); and Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HAM-D) items 4 (insomnia-early), 5 (insomnia-middle), and 6 (insomnia-late). MADRS total score change was analysed for patients who experienced high sleep disturbance, defined as having a baseline HAM-D sleep disturbance factor score >=4 and a baseline HAM-D sleep disturbance factor score <4. The intention-to-treat population used in the pooled analysis consisted of 1,752 patients. Quetiapine XR (all doses combined) significantly (P < .001) reduced MADRS item 4, HAM-D sleep disturbance factor and items 4 to 6, and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index total scores at last assessment from baseline versus placebo. Quetiapine also significantly (P < .001) improved MADRS total score from baseline versus placebo at all time points in patients experiencing high sleep disturbance. Funding for this study was provided by AstraZeneca. [Presentation title: Evaluation of the Effects of Quetiapine XR Monotherapy on Sleep Disturbance in Patients With MDD. Abstract PW01-03]
