ANA: New Questionnaire Helps Determine Level of Dysfunction Resulting From Parkinson's Disease

By Marvin Ross

TORONTO, ON -- October 7, 2004 -- A new, shorter and easier to administer questionnaire designed to assess handicap associated with Parkinson's disease was unveiled at the American Neurological Association here on October 5th 129th Annual Meeting.

Called "Handipark", the questionnaire arose out of the post-marketing analysis of the use of ropinirole in France, explained François Tison, MD, Service de Neurologie, Hopital Du Haut-Leveque, Pessac, France.

Dr. Tison presented a study that evaluated the validity of the Handipark questionnaire in 341 patients diagnosed with Parkinson's disease.

The questionnaire consists of 5 items that describe the global impact of Parkinson's disease on various aspects of daily life -- discomfort, occupational and leisure activity, ability to move about and travel, ability to dress and wash, and ability to feed oneself. Scores ranged from 1 (no or minimal functional impairment) to 10 (total dependency). The researchers also compared the Handipark against standard measurements tools currently in use to assess patients with Parkinson's disease.

Participants' mean score on the Handipark was 3.6 and increased significantly with age and with duration of disease. Correlations were high between the Handipark scores and scores on standard scales used in Parkinson's. The correlations with the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale was 0.66 (P <.0001), with the Hoehn and Yahr scale it was 0.65 (P <.0001), with Schwab and England it was -0.73 (P <.0001), with the first item on the Clinical Global Impressions score was 0.75 (p<0.0001), and with the 39-question Parkinson's Disease Questionnaire it was 0.57 (P <.0001).

While the Handipark is not a descriptive tool, Dr. Tison said, further validation will be provided after a 1-year follow up of the data is completed.
