Amevive (Alefacept), Treatment for Psoriasis, Approved in Israel, Receives 'Positive Opinion' From Swiss Regulatory Authority

ZUG, SWITZERLAND -- May 3, 2004 -- Biogen Idec (Nasdaq: BIIB) today announced that the Israeli Ministry of Health has approved Amevive® (alefacept) for sale in Israel for treatment of adult patients with moderate-to-severe chronic plaque psoriasis who are candidates for systemic therapy or phototherapy. Medison Pharma Ltd. of Petach Tikvah is the Amevive distributor in Israel.

In addition, the company said it has received a positive opinion letter from Swissmedic, the regulatory authority in Switzerland, and is in the final stages of negotiating indication and securing market approval.

AMEVIVE was approved last year in the United States. Applications for marketing authorization have also been submitted in Australia and Canada.
