| | | ![]() Kestine Now Available in The Netherlands for Hay Fever COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. -- April 16, 1997 -- Kestine(TM) (ebastine), a new once-daily non- sedating antihistamine, is now available for patients with seasonal allergic rhinitis, known as hay fever. Hay fever is a common health problem that affects approximately 10 percent of the population, in the Netherlands. It is most prevalent in people between the age of 20 and 45. The recommended dosage for Kestine is a single 10 mg tablet taken once daily. If patients have more severe symptoms, the dose can be increased to 20 mg once daily without increasing the risk of side effects such as sedation. This flexibility of use will provide patients with improved control of symptoms, especially during the peak of the allergy season. Hay fever is caused by an allergic sensitivity to pollens from trees, grasses or weeds, and typically occurs during spring, summer and fall. When affected persons are exposed to these pollens, their immune system releases the chemical histamine. Histamine produces inflammation and swelling of the nasal lining, sinuses, eyelids and surface layers of the eyes. The result is nasal congestion, sneezing, itching of the nose, watery eyes and runny nose. Ebastine is licensed for marketing and development to Rhone-Poulenc Rorer by Almirall, a leading pharmaceutical company in Spain. Kestine is already marketed by Rhone-Poulenc Rorer in Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden. It is also available under the brand name of Ebastel(R) in Spain through Almirall, in Japan through Dainippon and Meiji Seika and in South Korea through Boryung. The product is also marketed in Pakistan through E. Merck. Rhone-Poulenc Rorer Inc. is a global pharmaceutical company.
