The approval is based on data from multiple studies in which 211 patients with multiple AKs in face or scalp were treated with the methyl aminolevulinate cream or placebo prior to illumination with Aktilite. Both studies showed significantly better response with the cream compared with placebo at 3 months after treatment. The approval for the sBCC indication is based on a study which included 196 patients treated with either methyl aminolevulinate or excision surgery. Three months after treatment the reduction in lesion count was nearly 90% and similar for the 2 treatments. One year after treatment the cosmetic outcome was significantly better for the patients treated with methyl aminolevulinate compared with the patients who had surgical treatment.
