Jorge F. Maspero, MD, Fundacion CIDEA, Allergy and Respiratory Research Institute, Buenos Aires, Argentina, presented the results of a randomised study assessing the long-term safety of MF/F in patients with moderate to severe asthma previously treated with medium- to high-dose inhaled corticosteroids. A total of 404 patients, aged 12 years and older, were randomised to twice daily doses of MF/F 200/10 mcg (n = 141); MF/F 250/50 mcg (n = 130); FP/S 400/10 mcg (n = 68); or FP/S 500/50 mcg (n = 65), for 1 year. The primary endpoint was the percentage of patients reporting adverse events. All regimens were well tolerated, with similar rates of adverse events. The most common treatment-related adverse events in the MF/F group were dysphonia (5% medium-dose group, 3.1% high-dose group) and headache (4.3% medium-dose group, 3.1% high-dose group). In patients receiving FP/S, headache occurred in 5.9% of the medium-dose group and in 1.5% of those on the higher dose. Arthralgia occurred in 4.4% of the medium-dose group and 1.5% of high-dose group. Oral candidiasis was uncommon, occurring in 1.1% of mometasone-treated patients and in 2.2% of fluticasone-treated patients. "Mometasone furoate/formoterol was well tolerated over 1 year at medium and high doses, with a safety profile similar to fluticasone/salmeterol and no unusual or unexpected adverse events," Dr. Maspero concluded. Funding for this study was provided by a grant from Schering-Plough.
