![]() LYON, France, March 27, 1997 -- Flamel Technologies S.A. (Nasdaq: FLMLY) today announced Dr. Philippe Vivet will join the company as vice president and director of medical affairs, with responsibility for the clinical development of Flamel products including those based on its Micropump and Medusa technologies. Dr. Vivet, 41, most recently served as clinical research project director at Sanofi Recherche, in France, where he was responsible for clinical development of internal medicine products in Europe. Previously, from 1989- 1994, he was director of cardiovascular drug development at the Institut de Recherches International Servier, in Paris. Prior to that, he served as international coordinator of development of broncho-respiratory compounds at Roussel Uclaf in France. Dr. Vivet received his medical training at the Necker Medical School, Paris University. Flamel currently has two products in advanced clinical development. Asacard, the company's controlled-release aspirin designed to maintain aspirin's cardiovascular benefits with reduced gastric side effects, is the subject of applications for marketing approval filed in France and the U.K. Viropump, a controlled-release formulation of Aciclovir, designed to reduce the dosing frequency for the treatment of acute genital herpes from five times daily to twice daily, is now in a Phase III trial in Europe. The company is proceeding with other formulations based on its Micropump technology as well as with applications of its Medusa technology for the nanoencapsulization and protection against degradation of proteins and peptide-based drugs and vaccines. "Dr. Vivet's extensive experience in the clinical development of significant pharmaceutical products will be most valuable to Flamel as we continue to advance our drug development programs," said Dr. Grard Soula, chief executive officer of Flamel Technologies. Flamel Technologies is engaged in the development of advanced polymer technologies for unique drug delivery and biomaterial applications. The Company is building on its principal technology platforms -- through programs including Micropump and Medusa in drug-delivery, ColCys in biomaterial-based medical devices, and new materials for ophthalmic lens products -- to meet important unmet medical needs and develop other commercially valuable products. In June 1996, Flamel completed its initial public offering in the United States.
