Biprel is the only combination anti-hypertensive offering the benefits of both Coversyl® and Lozide®. A once-daily fixed- dose tablet, Biprel combines the benefits of an ACE Inhibitor with a diuretic which act synergistically for excellent blood pressure control.(1,2) Biprel is indicated for the treatment of mild to moderate essential hypertension in patients for whom combination therapy is appropriate. According to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, one out of five Canadians has high blood pressure.(3) And almost two-thirds of patients require multiple treatment agents to achieve blood pressure control.(4) Biprel is an important new treatment option that offers the benefits of a two-in-one tablet and provides patients with a new choice to help manage their hypertension more effectively both from a compliance and cost perspective. In a recent multi-center, randomized, double-blind, parallel-group study, Biprel was shown to be equally as effective as the combination of enalapril 20mg/hydrochlorothiazide 12.5 mg with reductions of diastolic blood pressure of -13.1 mmHg and -14.2mmHg respectively.(2) ACE Inhibitors and Diuretics Despite what some Canadians may think, high blood pressure gives almost no warnings. In fact, close to half the people who have it don't know they do. When high blood pressure is left untreated, it can lead to heart disease, stroke and kidney disease. ACE inhibitors belong to a family of drugs known as "vasodilators". Vasodilators help the blood vessels to relax and dilate (open up). By relaxing the blood vessels, ACE inhibitors reduce blood pressure and decrease the effort and workload of the heart. Diuretics (commonly known as "water pills") work on the kidneys to produce more urine. By decreasing water and salt in the body, they lower blood pressure and help reduce the workload on the heart.
