The findings from a post-hoc, subgroup analysis of the phase 4 Measuring Acne Outcomes in a Real-World Experience (MORE) trial were presented in a poster session on February 3. The MORE trial evaluated the efficacy and safety of adapalene gel, 0.1% when used with other acne treatments. The analysis of the MORE trial database was conducted by Jonathan Weiss, MD, Dermatologist, Gwinnett Dermatology, PC, Snellville, Georgia, United States, and researchers at Galderma L.P. The analysis included 315 patients who had been treated with the combination of adapalene 0.1% gel and a benzoyl peroxide-antibiotic for 12 weeks. Mean age was 21 years; 62.6% were female and 72.5% were Caucasian; 78.7% had moderate acne at baseline. Subjects were assessed at weeks 6 and week 12 of the trial. At week 6, the investigators found an approximately 50% reduction in total lesion counts compared with baseline. At week 12, median lesion counts were significantly reduced from baseline for total lesions, inflammatory lesions and non-inflammatory lesions (P <.0001 for all). All lesion types were reduced by greater than 65% at this time point. Median total lesions were reduced by 68.29%, median inflammatory lesions were reduced by 71.43%, and median non-inflammatory lesions were reduced by 66.67%. Self-reported treatment compliance was very high at week 6 (92.5%) and at week 12 (89.5%). "Tolerability problems were rare and typically mild in severity," the authors noted. "These results further support the common practice of combining adapalene and benzoyl peroxide-antibiotic combination agents for treatment of acne vulgaris," The authors concluded. "Prospectively designed studies evaluating this and other combination strategies would be useful in further defining the efficacy and safety of combination strategies in the treatment of acne vulgaris," they noted. The research was supported by Galderma Laboratories, L.P.
