Pandel Cream on the Market for Psoriasis and Dermatitis

MELVILLE, N.Y., March 21, 1997 -- A new cream is now available for the treatment of psoriasis and atopic dermatitis in American adults. Pandel(R) (hydrocortisone buteprate) cream, 0.1% a nonhalogenated corticosteroid was designed to provide idpotency topical activity with low risk of systemiceffects, according to Savage Laboratories(R).

"Pandel Cream, 0.1% effectively relieved the signs and symptoms of psoriasis and improved the overall disease condition significantly better than placebo in a three week, double-blind, randomized study of 169 patients with mild to moderate psoriasis," says Dr. David Kaplan, FACP, FAAD, clinical investigator for Savage Laboratories.

"Good to excellent responses were recorded for 41.3% of 84 treated patients compared to 18.1% of 85 patients receiving placebo,” Dr. Kaplan added. “Overall, physicians recorded positive efficacy evaluations in more than half of the drug-treated patients in the study. We
saw notable improvement in erythema, scaling, skin thickening and pruritus, with twice daily applications, and the patients will appreciate avoiding the one or two additional applications required daily for some currently available halogenated products."

In a second, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study study of 168 patients with atopic dermatitis, physicians saw an excellent safety profile and a good-to-excellent efficacy profile in the 106 receiving the cream. 'Pandel Cream, 0.1%' was significantly superior to placebo in reducing the skin lesion severity and in overall disease improvement in 77.3% of patients. Good to excellent responses were seen in 68.8%.

The most frequent adverse reactions reported for Pandel Cream, 0.1% have included: burning in 4, stinging in 2, and moderate paresthesia in 1 out of 226 patients.

Savage Laboratories of Melville, New York, is a subsidiary of Altana Inc.
