In this report, the INCB expresses their opinion regarding the increased usage and mentions Ritalin(R) (methylphenidate hydrochloride). Over the past several years, increased knowledge and better education about ADD has led to increased, accurate diagnosis of the disorder by physicians. Patient support groups have played a key role in these educational efforts. Ciba, like many pharmaceutical companies, supports the educational needs of many patient groups as such support groups are credible, reliable sources of information to their members. The safety and efficacy of Ritalin have been well documented for over 40 years. Hundreds of clinical studies around the world have demonstrated the positive impact of this important therapeutic drug in the treatment of ADD. Ciba supports only the appropriate use of its medications and is concerned about reports of Ritalin abuse. Ciba monitors the reported abuse of all its medications, and continues to diligently track these events. The Company continues to work with all appropriate regulatory agencies to address these issues. Ciba has also developed a nationwide campaign in the US to inform and educate physicians, pharmacists, parents and patients as to the proper use of Ritalin and its administration in both the home and school environment. To date, Ciba has not been contacted by any representative of the INCB. Ciba is interested in discussing the INCB's report with them directly, and to provide them with the Company's views on some of the issues which in Ciba's opinion may have been misrepresented.
